How to Prepare Kids for VPK

Lithia, United States - March 18, 2021 / Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Circa / FishHawk /

Sending a child to preschool or Pre-K marks an important moment in their lives. Scientists agree that Pre-K is important, as studies show that children who attend preschool perform better in elementary school and are even more likely to attend college.

While this is often an exciting time, it can also bring questions or stress as families prepare their child for such a big change. Here are a few ways to prepare kids for their first day of VPK.

How to Prepare Kids for VPK

#1: Visit the classroom beforehand.

Take the time to visit the classroom at least once or twice before their first day. If possible, schedule a meeting with the teacher and allow the child to meet their classmates as well. Even just exploring the new rooms and areas beforehand can help ease those first-day jitters.

Even if the child has attended daycare or another preschool program, a new environment can create just as much anxiety. If there’s no way to visit the classroom beforehand, just driving or walking can still be very helpful.

#2: Become familiar with the VPK program’s activities and curriculum.

Accredited VPK programs stick to well-developed curriculums throughout the year. For parents and family members, this can keep them involved in the learning process from day one. Knowing the curriculum can also be helpful when preparing kids for what they will be learning in the future.

#3: Have a one-on-one discussion.

Parents and family members should sit down with their children and help them understand exactly what to expect when starting Pre-K. Talk with them about what will happen in the first few days, how their day-to-day schedule will be changing, and what sort of activities they will be participating in.

Telling kids what to expect will help them better transition into Pre-K and enjoy the change overall.

#4: Pay attention to their feelings and soothe their anxieties.

Parents and family members should also encourage kids to be open about their feelings and ask questions. If they show any anxieties, try to reassure them and soothe their fears before they start their first day.

#5: Prime them for their learning at home.

Teaching them some of the same valuable skills they will be learning in their VPK program can set kids up for success. Here are a few ways to prime their learning at home:

  • Read them books about preschool and help them become strong readers
  • Let them participate in playgroups and other community activities
  • Teach them the importance of following instructions
  • Help them learn independence and self-help skills such as washing their hands, going to the bathroom, and communicating their needs to adults

#6: Find ways to make them more comfortable.

Sometimes the smallest things can make all the difference in making a child comfortable on their first day of Pre-K.

First, get organized. Make sure the child has everything they need, such as a backpack, clothes, shoes, and other supplies. Choose other ways to help make their first day as exciting and comfortable as possible. Here are a few ideas:

  • Prepare a special lunch or snack.
  • Let them bring photos of their family, friends, or pets.
  • Pack their favorite toy or stuffed animal.
  • Stay with them for the first 15 or 20 minutes on their first day.
  • Offer plenty of reassuring words.
