Life skills a child must start learning early
As children navigate through their worlds, there are certain life skills they must learn in order to thrive. From independence and leadership to confidence and time management, children can begin imbibing these skills from early on. Kids ‘R’ Kids shares the most crucial life skills parents and educators can teach to preschoolers.
1. Time management
This is an essential life skill that a child will need at every turn of life from waking up on time for school to reaching work on time or fulfilling a deadline as an adult. Parents can encourage children to take charge of their own time. To begin with, children can be taught how to measure time, stay on task, and keep to a schedule. For instance, getting an alarm clock can help children get ready for school on time while a planner can assist them in keeping track of their schoolwork and extracurricular activities.
2. Decision making
The decision to follow a career path or to choose a spouse are big decisions that adults make. Children must learn the art of decision-making at an early age. They can begin making basic choices such as chocolate or vanilla ice cream, blue socks or white socks, playing on trains, or playing cars. At the elementary school age, they can begin learning about the rewards of good decisions and the consequences of bad decisions. They can learn to make sensible judgments by weighing the pros and cons, making a final decision, and observing the consequences of those choices.
3. Money management
Effective money management is essential for children so they can learn how to save and spend wisely. The fundamentals of using checks, credit cards, and cash apps can be explained to children to make them understand that it is not free money. Giving them pocket money is a great way to teach them the value of money. A bank account in a child’s name can motivate the child to save and deposit the money in the account. Helping out with simple chores to earn money not only clarifies the concept of money exchange but also makes them understand the value of money.
4. Sustainable practices to preserve the environment
The tiny tots today are the future of this planet. It is very important to create awareness in the children today about the value of our environment and its preservation. Practicing and imbibing sustainable habits that are in favor of the environment will help children carry the same habits into the future. Making simple lifestyle changes at home and participating in environmental activities such as gardening and rubbish collection for disposal, encouraging children to plant a few saplings in the garden, and watering them are some of the habits that can be created at an early age.
5. Cleaning
Taking care of one’s belongings and home is a life skill. It is not a gender-specific task. When they grow up, children will need to be proficient at managing their households. Parents can begin with age-appropriate chores such as learning how to make the bed, emptying the dishwasher, and dusting furniture. Children must also be encouraged to clean after the mess they create after playing or a spill.
Education is not just about language or numerical literacy but also about learning the skills that help a child thrive in the world. Kids ‘R’ Kids and its educators work hard to imbibe the right knowledge and skills in children.
